This is a wonderful Europa Nostra Award-winning zoo in the very heart of Budapest! The capital’s zoo is one of the oldest in the world with a history of almost 150 years. The first inhabitant of the zoo was a giraffe from Vienna given as a present from the Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife Elisabeth. Peaceful relaxation, historic structures for the animals – such as the Elephant House – and a unique interactive exhibition area, the Magic Hill (Varázshegy) await visitors. To see the amazing park and the Palm House in their entirety leave yourself at least half a day. The Gundel Restaurant right next door is equated with the history of Hungarian gastronomy and hospitality. Its founder, Károly Gundel, tamed Hungarian cuisine and blended it with influences arriving from the expanding world – and thus put Hungary on the world’s map of gastronomy.
